Specialised Treatment for Brain and Nerve Disorders

Neurosurgery

Neurosurgery, in other words, brain and nerve diseases, is a branch of science that deals with the treatment of tumors arising from the brain and spinal cord tissue or pressing on these tissues, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as lumbar and cervical hernia, head and spinal cord injuries, cerebral vascular occlusions and cerebral hemorrhages, aneurysms, ie bubbles in the vessels that feed the brain and spinal cord.

What are the types of neurosurgery?

It is a medical specialty to treat diseases or injuries of the brain or nervous system. The departments we serve are briefly as follows:

Lumbar Hernia

Lumbar disc herniation (herniated disc) refers to the condition in which the disc between the vertebrae is displaced and compresses the spinal cord and the nerve roots coming from the spinal cord. The Lumbar Hernia surgery process is as follows:

^

Endoscopic lumbar hernia surgery can be performed under general anesthesia (putting the patient to sleep), spinal anesthesia (numbing the patient from the waist down), or local anesthesia (numbing only the area where the procedure will be performed).

^

Depending on the location of the hernia, the hernia is removed by entering the area where the hernia tissue is located through a camera with a 4 mm gap in the back or 8-10 cm side of the waist. A 7 mm skin incision is sufficient. Mostly, the procedure is performed by entering between the muscles without touching the bone tissue. In this way, muscle and bone tissue is preserved.

^

This method is usually applied around the nerve root and disc to reduce leg pain in initial hernias or to reduce adhesions around the nerve in patients with previous surgery. It is performed with an endoscope through a 1 cm incision approximately 3-5 cm above the bone known as the tail end bone.

^

The surgery aims to remove the pressure of the herniated disc on the nerve causing pain and weakness in the leg. The most commonly used method is discectomy or partial discectomy in which only the herniated disc is removed. Depending on the condition of the hernia, endoscopic, microscopic, or open surgical methods can be selected.

Does Neurosurgery Treat Hernia?

Surgical intervention is applied in traumatic diseases of the spine such as accidents and injuries, narrowing of the spinal canal, and congenital diseases that occur in old age such as slipping in the waist. In addition, diseases such as lumbar and cervical herniated discs are treated by neurosurgeons.

Which Patients Does Neurosurgery Treat?

Neurosurgery, derived from the words neuron and neurosurgery, can be defined as brain and nervous system surgery in general. Neurosurgery physicians deal with the diagnosis, follow-up, and treatment of diseases arising from the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nervous system, as well as tumors that compress these tissues.

What is the Recovery Period After Brain Surgery?

The patient usually rests at home for 2 weeks after discharge from the hospital. Stitches are removed 2 weeks after the operation, and the first check-up is performed in the first month. Subsequent check-ups are performed in the 3rd, 6th and 12th month.
