What is cataract surgery?

Cataract surgery is a common surgery among people who are over 40 years old. Our eyes have a complex structure. Behind the colored part, there is a structure that allows the refraction of light with the natural lens. Any thickening, or cloudiness in the eye lens directly affects vision. In cataract surgery, this natural lens of the eye is removed and replaced with an artificial one.

  • During the operation, a tiny cut is made in your eye to remove the old lens and replace it with the new one.
  • The surgery is done under local anesthesia and usually takes between 30-45 minutes.
  • If you have cataracts in both eyes, you may be recommended to have the surgery at the same time or the same day.

Based on your situation and your doctor’s preference, there are 2 different types of cataract surgeries:

^

Intracapsular Cataract Extraction (ICCE):

This method is based on removing the lens from the inside of the eye and placing a new lens in its position, and it is applied with anesthesia. However, it has become considered a very old and less preferred method throughout the years.

^

Extracapsular Cataract Extraction (Phaco)

This operation can be performed without the need for anesthesia thanks to the special eye drops. Essentially, the front part of the lens can be removed with a cut. Then, the remaining part inside is cleaned with sound waves and vibrations. Afterward, a new intraocular lens is placed through a small incision.
