Therefore, many patients consult clinics for treatment. Fortunately, there is a treatment for hallux valgus deformity in the foot that will force you at some points, from pain to disruptions in daily life. What is hallux valgus?

Hallux valgus definition in the medical literature is the protruding appearance of the bone on the side of the big toe. It occurs at the metatarsophalangeal joint on the inner edge of the big toe, where the base of the big toe merges with the foot. Genetic factors, improper shoe selection, and physical activities are indicative of the emergence of the disease. However, treatment may differ depending on the curvature of the protrusion on the feet and the physical condition of the patient.

How is hallux valgus surgery performed?

First, the anatomy of Hallux valgus is examined in a physical examination by the surgeon. The tightness of the Achilles tendons and the instability in the joints are examined. Then, the patient’s X-ray image is taken while standing. Thus, the anatomy of Hallux valgus is revealed and the degree of curvature is determined. If the hallux valgus angle is less than 15 degrees, it is normal, if it is between 15 and 30 degrees it is mild, if it is between 30 and 40 degrees it is moderate and if it is over 40 degrees it is severe.

Depending on the degree of curvature, it is decided whether the treatment will be surgical or non-surgical. In non-surgical methods, the curve is tried to be corrected with orthosis or medial bunion pads. If the curve cannot be corrected by physical methods, surgery is required.

After anesthesia, the surgeon makes incisions inside or above the joint. Depending on the protrusion, the surgeon can cut or remove bone to realign the joint if necessary. If the toe is amputated, the bone is stabilized with screws, plates, or wires. The soft tissues around the toe are lengthened or shortened to match the cut or removed bone. Finally, the incisions are stitches and the treated area is wrapped with gauze. A self-closing soft boot is placed to support the entire foot.

Recovery after hallux valgus surgery

Since the surgery will be performed while you are awake, you can be discharged on the same day, but you may stay in the hospital for 1-2 days depending on the difficulty of the surgery. For about 6 weeks after the surgery, your foot will remain in a self-closing boot and you will use crutches. In the first 24 or 48 hours after the surgery, painkillers will be injected with a syringe. You will then continue to take painkillers orally. You will need to come back to the clinic within two weeks after the operation to have your stitches removed. It is important to keep your bandaged foot dry and elevated during these two weeks. At your second visit to the clinic at the end of the fourth week, an x-ray image of your foot will be taken and a physical training schedule will be determined accordingly.
